Typesetting and Design

The Typesetting process starts after the book design and layout has been finalized. Once typeset the book is proofread, and is then ready for the generation of digital print files, from which film is generated for processing into offset plates for printing. For short print runs the files can be processed directly to plates, ready for printing.
Book design takes into account the type of book in terms of content, whether it will be printed on plain paper, art paper, or textured paper. Other factors are page size, whether images will be used, and whether images will be black and white or in colour. Additional factors in the case of academic books, are whether the book will have footnotes or end notes, and any other reference matter.
Another area is redesign of an earlier edition or an out of print book. Redesigning can, and usually does involve the change of spellings and punctuation to bring them up to date, and proofreading to correct any errors which were present in the original edition.
